What is the best second hand car?
Defining what is the “best second hand car” is no easy task. You like blue sports cars and I like a red estate. We all have different tastes – we all have different priorities. In this review we’ve picked our top two cars based on the following criteria:
1. Reliability. We believe that, whether you are paying £3,000 or £30,000 this has to be the number one priority if it is a car that you use every day.
2. Running costs. Again we’re assuming this is your only car – not part of a collection of classics where running costs are not a concern.
3. Depreciation. They say a car is your second most expensive purchase and the one thing that really eats into the wallet is the annual depreciation costs which can run into thousands of pounds a year if you choose badly.
So that’s OUR criteria for what is the best second hand car.
Best Second Hand Car in the UK
Our first choice, and it’s a clear winner, has to be the VW golf – a car that has proven itself over the last 40 years to be one of the most popular and reliable cars on the road today. The excellent build quality has been a consistent feature of the VW Golf irrespective of which model and year you aspire to own. That alone is why so many people consider it to be the best second hand car you could buy.
But if you agree that the Golf is a contender for best second hand car then the next question is diesel or petrol?
Our view is that the small petrol engine is probably the best choice since it is quicker – and it still returns between 45 and 50 miles to the gallon.
Best second hand car – the Ford is a close second when it comes to best second hand car deals.
It will come as no surprise that we have the Ford Focus in second place (very close second it has to be said) in our view on the best second hand car you can buy for your money. Now I know what you’re thinking. The Ford Focus is hardly going to get the heart racing. That’s true – but it all comes back to what we said about priorities. The Focus won’t get your heart racing when it comes to maintenance and repairs bills as well – that’s important. We are talking solid reliable day after day reliability and low cost motoring – get a Ferrari if you won’t a faster heart beat – but be prepared to pay for the privilege.
The Mark 2 Focus offers great quality motoring at a very affordable price – mainly due to the fact that there are so many available on the second hand market. This gives you great choice in model and specification. Again our preference is for the petrol version over the diesel.
Running costs are low and repair costs, being a Ford, will never come as a shock.
Best Second hand car – resale values.
One of the other reasons we have chosen these two cars is that when you come to sell there is a huge demand. Provided you are careful about choosing your colour and trim pack both models will be easy to move on when you are ready for a change. When it comes to choosing a car that fits the category of “best second hand car”, you won’t go far wrong with either of these models.
